A farming cooperative Our partner formed a cooperative of local farmers\nin the Southern regions of Spain. The plants are grown organically, without\nthe use of herbicides or pesticides. Southern Spain is the perfect environment\nfor growing aloe plants and the plantations provide aloe all year round. The\nfarmers in the cooperative are given aloe plants and training is provided on\nhow to plant, maintain and harvest them. Supporting local farmers Many local\nfarmers grow vegetables other crops such as sunflower, olive and grapes that\nare typical for the area and get a very poor return on their produce, a lot of\nwork for very little income. Aloe offers diversity from the usual crops and\ngives a good return and supplements their income. They are paid a monthly\nsalary rather than per delivery per product, helping them to maintain\nfinancial stability. Successful growth Aloe Vera thrives in these dry\nconditions and does not require irrigation, the moisture in the air from the\nsea is enough to sustain them. The whole area produces 20,000kg of leaves\nevery harvest, three times a year. Two and a half leaves makes 1kg of aloe\nvera gel. The Aloe Vera plants produce six to seven baby plants each year, and\nonce established, these can be replanted to expand the crop and provide an\nincome year round for the farms.
